Versions and Time

I keep having to remind myself that I have read worse first attempts to publish a novel then mine.

One of my favorite books is Saber and Shadow (http://www.amazon.com/Saber-Shadow-S-M-Stirling/dp/0671721437/ref=sr_1_1) however there is a shorter, less detailed version that came out years before this one called The Sharpest Edge (http://www.amazon.com/Sharpest-Edge-S-M-Stirling/dp/0451141717/ref=la_B000AP5GTA_1_53). Honestly, I hated it once I found it. My favorite bits of humor and scenes were missing. The writing and characters came off as flat. It was just not as compelling as the later rewrite.

The difference between the two books was massive, yet they are the same novel, just re-written with more experience years later.

The novel I am editing may always need to be edited and re-written. But for now it is as good as I can make it and at some point I have to be happy with that and allow it to go out into the world. After all, I can always re-write it later 😉

That’s not a bad idea. You are your own worst critic.

I am still considering your offer to edit. Just had this rattling around my head all week. I have been re-writing various scenes for my novel all week as well as the pacing and tenses are pissing my off. This post was my attempt at sanity, lol.
