Ugly

Suddenly, her face was no longer the problem. She had always been the ugly girl, the one everyone ignored and brushed aside. Now that was not a problem. Ninty percent of the female population had died during the wars thanks to an engineered virus that had done its job too well. Now women were considered precious. They were given every luxury, any want fulfilled, as long as they agreed to birth a child a year. Most male births were aborted as soon as the sex could be identified.

She gave a small bitter smile into the mirror. Men were fighting over her, just as she had always wanted when she was younger and watching her sisters date. Yet she hated it. She could be wearing a burlap sack and still they would fawn over her. They did not see or even truly want her, they just wanted a woman, any woman.

    Intriguing idea.
A longer story based on how such a society would look and what would happen to a woman who refuses to be a baby-maker would be very interesting.
And a generation from that, how would it be then? 30, 60, 90 years later?
